Ask a member of the public to name a drum’n’bass musician and chances are they’ll respond with the answer Goldie. Such is Goldie’s fame as a producer and musical innovator (among his many other pursuits) that he’s transcended the scene that spawned him and today he remains one of Britain’s most famous – and most recognisable – individuals.
Born Clifford Price, Goldie first came to prominence via graffiti and breakdancing. He was given the nickname Goldielocks thanks to his long dreadlocks, which when he cut them off was shortened to Goldie.
In the early 90s his then girlfriend, the DJ Kemistry, introduced him to the breakbeat scene that had emerged from rave. He spent many nights at Grooverider and Fabio’s seminal proto jungle night Rage and befriended producers Dego and Marc Mac (aka 4hero). In 1992 he released two EPs, Killa Muffin and Darkrider, on their Reinforced label under the name Rufige Kru. This was followed by the classic Terminator EP, released under the name Metal Heads.
In 1994, as jungle morphed into drum’n’bass, he established the pivotal Metalheadz label. Powered by London Records’ ffrr imprint, his debut album, 1995’s Timeless, was a massive critical and commercial hit, crossing over into the charts and reaching number seven. It contained the track Inner City Life, a 21-minute opus featuring the vocals of Diane Charlemagne.
The ambitious Saturnz Return followed in 1998, opening with the 60 minute opus Mother, and contributions from the likes of David Bowie, KRS-One and Noel Gallagher. After the remix EP Ring of Saturn, Goldie put his hand to acting, including key appearances in James Bond 007’s The World is Not Enough and Guy Ritchie’s Snatch.
To this day, Goldie continues to innovate and move forward tirelessly in all his sonic and artistic endeavours. After a global slew of DJ sets, an exhilarating live show at Glastonbury 2024 and a special performance at Abbey Road, the year ahead promises new music and much more.
